There could soon be travel chaos for thousands of commuters across the country within the next month after it was revealed last night that staff at Iarnród Éireann will ballot for strike action.

The news which could ultimately cause widespread disruption comes after talks over pay and conditions at the Workplace Relations Commission broke down last night.

Reports say the immediate threat of strike action which could happen within three weeks, comes after union chiefs representing staff at the rejected the company’s offer of a 1.5% pay rise.

It is thought that Irish Rail staff have been extremely angered by the offer which representatives have described as “dismal”.

Although union chiefs have said they are open to further negotiations if the company are willing to match their terms which is thought to be in the region of 3%.
