The streets of Dublin are awash with stranded commuters this morning, as Luas drivers are on strike today and tomorrow.
Some 90,000 people are all dressed up and nowhere to go as trams stop running. Hence, they must resort to private cars, trains, or buses, overloading a system that can barely cope as it is.
The Luas drivers row centers around pay. They are asking for pay increases of up to 53%, and averaging at 40%, over the next seven years.
Such demands are unlikely to be met by the Luas operator, Transdev. Transport Minister Paschal Donohoe, also in serious danger of losing his seat, desperately attempted to mediate, to no avail.
The row continues.
