SuperValu inching closer to overthrowing Tesco as Ireland’s supermarket leader

SuperValu is set to become king among shoppers very soon, if the trend continues, thus overthrowing the once mighty Tesco from the top spot. The latter has recently posted the lowest market share for many years.

Yet, the biggest increase in sheer sales comes from German companies Aldi and Lidl. Both retailers have posted double-digit increases when compared with last year’s results.

The latest figures released for the 12 weeks leading to early October show that SuperValu was (apart from the two discount retailers) the only chain to actually increase its sales percentage when compared with the same time last year.

‘SuperValu’s growth has been moderate but consistent, and its buyout of the Superquin brand has given it a vastly increased presence in Dublin,’ it has been reported.

Tesco’s slice of the Irish market pie has dramatically dropped to 25.1%, while SuperValu’s has risen to 24.6%, which puts the latter within a whisker to stealing Tesco’s crown.
