The Opal Tower complex in Sydney has been evacuated following residents hearing a very ‘loud crack’ noise from the building’s structure.
Some 3,000 people from inside the tower and in nearby buildings were told to leave immediately, with engineers investigatingn the apartment complex and declaring that the building had indeed moved one or two millimetres.
That mightn’t sound much but with a building that size and weight – the physics involved means that is quite a dramatic change.
The apartment tower is located in Sydney’s Olympic Park, the scene of the 2000 Olympics. It was only recently completed and open this year with some 392 apartments.
