Syrian conflict continues to escalate after US jet shoots down armed pro-Syrian regime drone

The geopolitical stability in Syria is riding on a knife’s edge, after several high-profile incidents over the last few days.

Three days ago, an US Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet shot down a Syrian Su-22 aircraft, marking a deadly escalation of the conflict.

Today, an US F-15E fighter jet has shot down a pro-Syrian regime drone over the At Tanf area.

A statement released after the incident said that the drone was armed, and that it “displayed hostile intent and advanced on Coalition forces.”

The drone, an Iranian-made Shahed 129, is the second of its type to be shot down this month. The first one was downed after it dropped dud ordnance on coalition troops.

Military tensions in Syria are escalating quickly, as different factions converge on the town of Raqqa, which has been ISIS’ de facto administrative capital for almost three years.

Russia released a statement in response to the downing of the Su-22 aircraft, saying that any US air assets detected flying west of the Euphrates River would be considered a valid target.
