Tánaiste trapped in car by angry anti-water protesters

According to reports the Tánaiste Joan Burton has been trapped in her car and is being prevented from leaving an event which she was attending this afternoon. Ms Burton is understood to be trapped by angry anti-water charge protesters in Jobstown.

It is understood that crowds of up to 100 people have surrounded Ms Burton’s car which has prevented her from being able to move for the past two hours. Gardaí were quickly called to the scene and are believed to be dealing with the incident. It is also understood that there have been some scuffles and items thrown.

The Tánaiste is believed to have been attending a higher education graduation ceremony for students. A spokesperson for Ms Burton has said it was meant to be a day to celebrate their achievements and nothing should take away from them. It is now been confirmed that the Garda helicopter has been deployed.
