The Economic Management Council (EMC), which consists of the Taoiseach, Tanaiste, and Finance and Expenditure Ministers will meet today to discuss the ongoing controversy regarding water charges. Minister for the Environment Alan Kelly and Communications Minister Alex White are also scheduled to attend.
While no announcement is expected after the meeting, the Government are said to be ‘taking the time to get any new package of measures right.’
On the popular front, the country is gearing up for a massive nationwide demonstration against water charges on Saturday Nov. 01, with many other local events also set to go ahead in the coming days.
While a spokesperson for the Government accepted that people ‘feel strongly’ about this issue, its stance remains firm that the water charges will have to be paid.
