The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has confirmed that a group which is looking into the possible decriminalisation of cannabis is currently reviewing a number of jurisdictions and territories were such laws have been introduced.

Mr Varadkar who was speaking at the British-Irish Council this week, said the proposal is being reviewed by the group which was set up to for alternatives last November.

Although no official guidelines have been set out, the Taoiseach did state that the idea is under consideration and reviews of similar laws in other countries such as Canada, Portugal and the US are being reviewed by the group.

It is thought that the Taoiseach’s comments come after Canada historically changed its laws earlier this week to allow for the consumption and cultivation of the drug for recreational use from October onwards.
