Taoiseach: “Fine Gael will not form a ‘footsie’ government with Fianna Fáil if we are elected back into power”

The Taoiseach and Fine Gael party leader Enda Kenny has claimed that there will be no “footsie” Government with the Fianna Fail party if his Fine Gael is voted back into power.

Mr Kenny made his comments when speaking to Newstalk’s Pat Kenny recently, Mr Kenny has seemingly ruled out any possibility of forming a coalition Government with Michael Martin’s Fianna Fáil and believes that nobody will consider “doing business” with them. When questioned by the Newstalk host the Taoiseach replied: “There will be no footsie with Fianna Fail. Fianna Fail have ruled themselves out of doing business with anybody. ” “They must be looking for an aspirational overall majority. I don’t think that’s going to happen.” The Fine Gael leader also said he would happily serve again as the country’s leader if that is what the Irish people decide they want. Mr Kenny also believes that it is highly unlikely that his party will win an overall majority giving them the mandate to lead a government themselves.

Meanwhile the Taoiseach also reiterated his support for the Labour party, claiming that Ms Burton’s party along with Fine Gael provide stability, an opportunity to fix the economy and get people back to work. Mr Kenny said: “That’s our core message and we’ve stuck with that for four and half years. “We haven’t done everything but we’ve worked with the people to pull our country out of an economic swamp, wash it down, fill the engine with fuel.” The news comes after the Taoiseach also confirmed that there will be no General Election this side before Christmas.
