Taoiseach offers consular services to Irish passport holding ISIS jihadi




The Taoiseach has offered consular services to a Belarusian man arrested in Syria where he was fighting for the Islamic State.

Alexandr Ruzmatovich Bekmirzaev (45) is an Irish citizen but has not lived in Ireland since 2013.

He was among five jihadi’s captured in Syria by US backed forces in the east of the war-torn country.

Despite losing almost all their territory I.S still maintain a significant presence in the desert of Eastern Syria straddling the border with Iraq.

The four others captured with Bekmirzaev were two US citizens and two Pakistanis.

The Taoiseach said that the Jihadi is entitled to consular services while he was visiting Irish soldiers serving as UN peacekeepers in Mali.
