Taoiseach: “There will be no general election this year as the Government is fully focused on tackling a number of key issues”

The Taoiseach Enda Kenny has today ruled out the prospect of another General Election in 2017, saying that the current minority Government will be focused on tackling a number of key issues.

Mr Kenny’s comments come after recent reports suggested that an early election could be held after the Fine Gael party lost support in recent polls.

However the Taoiseach has dismissed such rumours claiming that all those who in the Dáil are fully concentrating on matters effecting the Irish people.

Mr Kenny also said he fully believes that Ireland can still attract major investment despite the UK’s decision to leave the EU. Mr Kenny also said both he and the British Prime Minister have reached an agreement that will see the border between the North and South remain the same.

Mr Kenny told reporters: “We’ve agreed that there will not be a return to borders of the past, customs post along that border.

“And while this might present a challenge obviously it is a question to which we will achieve an answer. “So in that sense, we are both agreed that we preserve the common travel area and that there will not be a return to a hard border.”
