Germany has narrowly avoided another atrocity after police in Berlin detained 6 men who were planning a knife attack on the city’s annual half marathon.
The suspects are all aged between 18 and 21 years old and were known associates of Anis Amri, a Tunisian migrant who murdered 12 people and injured dozens more when he drove a truck through a family Christmas market in December 2016.
The police acted on a tip off from an unidentified foreign intelligence service. The country has had to contend with a deteriorating security situation as well as exacerbated social problems since it accepted millions of un-vetted Muslim migrants in 2015.
The half marathon passed off peacefully under increased security and police presence. 36,000 people participated setting a new record for turn out.
