The coming of the storm: Ophelia set to batter Ireland with fierce winds during the second half of the weekend and the beginning of next week

Hurricane Ophelia is currently gathering strength over the Atlantic, and is set on a collision course with Ireland.

Ophelia is expected to take an northeastern course, which would put it right on track to strike Ireland with a mighty punch.

If the weather system does remain on course, it could lash the country with winds upwards of 75mph and heavy rains this Sunday.

It will remain fairly mild throughout though, with temperatures hitting a rather unseasonable -for Ireland- 19C.
