Postmasters say the future of rural post offices are in serious danger unless they receive more Government funding

The future of post offices across the country is looking bleak as postmasters have revealed that there isn’t enough money to keep them afloat.

The latest warning comes after An Post confirmed earlier this year that over 200 post offices in rural areas are facing closures within the next 18 months if they continue to lose money.

According to the company the future of services in rural communities are at risk due to the continuing decline of people availing of their services.

The latest development has led to postmasters across th country to call on the Government to provide extra funding to An Post in order to keep the future of many post offices alive.

However the latest call will more than likely fall on deaf ears as many TD’s believe that such funding would be a waste given that there is no easy fix to the problem which is steadily getting worse.

An Post say they currently do not have any plans to enforce immediate closures but they do say future closures could very well be a real possibility.
