German Chancellor Angela Merkel has today called for a total ban on women wearing burqas across Germany.
Ms. Merkel was making her pitch for a fourth term in power when she made the assertion.
She said that ‘the full-face veil should be banned, wherever it is legally possible.’
There had been previous calls for a partial ban on burqas on German soil, as they were considered to be ‘contrary to integration.’
During her speech, Ms. Merkel also said that the refugee crisis ‘must never be repeated.’
The issue of refugee influx had become a sore thorn on the Chancellor’s side since she opened the German borders in 2016. She doggedly refused to reverse such policy, even as her party was losing ground all over Germany.
If the burqa prohibition comes to pass, it would be the fifth European country to enact such law, after France, Belgium, Bulgaria, and certain areas of Switzerland.
