Time to quit? Smoking is said to have caused the deaths of 6.4 million people in 2015

Smoking is said to be the cause of 6.4 million people in 2015, according to the Global Burden of Diseases report, which was compiled by hundreds of scientists.

Smoking is down in general however. In 1991, one in three men smoked and one in twelve women.

In 2015 that figure was one in four men and one in twenty women smoked – a considerable drop.

According to the report, more than 930 million people smoked daily in 2015, compared to 870 million in 1990, a 7% jump which almost makes the drop off rate irrelevant.

The most smokers are in China, India, the United States and Russia.

While running close to the top four are Indonesia, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Japan, Brazil, and Germany.
