Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has today hinted that tobacco products and fizzy drinks are likely to be the object of substantial tax hikes in the upcoming Budget.
Speaking during his party think-in, Mr. Varadkar said “Of course there will be revenue raising measures, I can’t go into specifics today, but it would be typical enough for example for there to be an increase in cigarettes, that is one of the things under consideration.”
“Also, I’m a long-time supporter of the sugar tax and I’d like to see that introduced next year, but I’m not in a position to get into detail.”
A so-called ‘sugar tax’ is also going to be introduced in the UK in the near future, purportedly to curb childhood obesity, but in reality nothing more than another revenue-making imposition.
