Superstar Tom Cruise it to return as Major William Cage for sci-fi sequel Edge of Tomorrow 2 alongside British actress Emily Blunt who is back as Full Metal Bitch.

The hit 2014 film is best described as Groundhog Day meets Starship Troopers as Cruise’s character must live the same day over the over again. In it a military officer is brought into an alien war against an extra-terrestrial enemy who can reset the day and know the future. When this officer is enabled with the same power, he teams up with a Special Forces warrior (Emily Blunt) to try and end the war. The aliens are called Mimics, who have invaded earth.

It is based on the 2004 Japanese book “All You Need Is Kill’ by award-winning author Hiroshi Sakurazaka. It was translated into English in 2009 and was republished as ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ to tie in with the film.

The movie was a hit internationally and made $100 million in the US alone, meaning a sequel was never really in any doubt. Tom himself is no stranger to sequels, having the long-running ‘Mission Impossible’ franchise still on the go since the first one hit our screens in 1996.

The 53-year-old shows no sign of slowing down, and is to also appear in Top Gun II, The Mummy, and Jack Reacher sequel ‘Never go Back’ as well as sci-fi Luna Park and crime thriller ‘Mena.’

There is no sequel to the book, so the new film most likely will rethread familiar ground. Emily Blunt (33) is making a name for herself as an action heroine. She has for instance been linked to a possible Expendables female spin-off to be called The Expendabelles.

More recently she played a kick-ass FBI agent in 2015 film Sicario in which her idealistic character is enlisted by a government task force to aid in the escalating war against drugs at the border area between the U.S. and Mexico. She has signed up for Sicario 2.

Doug Liman is back in the director’s chair for the Edge of Tomorrow sequel. He is also set to direct Cruise in Luna Park which tells the story of a renegade crew of former space workers who travel to the moon to steal an energy source.

“Tom innately understands that audiences come to the theatre not to watch a god but to see a good movie, and he will do everything in his power to make the film as great as possible. Nobody takes the trust of the audience more sacredly than him. When I’m working on a film, I think about how it will play with a tiny audience of friends whose opinions I respect, basically a 40-bloc radius from my apartment in Manhattan. Tom is thinking how it will play with the entire planet Earth,” he is quoted on IMDB.

He added, “Edge of Tomorrow was such an ambitious movie and a personal one. It was a labour of love for us all.”

We will have to see what this second labour of love will produce.
