Tom Petty’s manager comes out to officially announce the singer’s sudden death

The world renowned musician Tom Petty has died in California at the age of 66, according to a statement issued on behalf of his family.

Petty was found unconscious, not breathing and in full cardiac arrest at his Malibu home early yesterday.

After much confusion from media organisations as to the depth of severity of Mr Petty’s condition, he sadly was taken to hospital, but could not be revived and died at around 3am Irish time.

Petty was best known as the lead singer of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, and his hits included American Girl, Breakdown, Free Fallin’, Learning to Fly and Refugee.

He was surrounded by his family and friends at the time of his passing.

“He died peacefully at 20:40 Pacific timd surrounded by family, his bandmates and friends,” said his manager Tony Dimitriades.
