A man has died at the SSE Airtricity Dublin half-marathon. The 23-year-old from Dublin collapsed 300 or 400 metres away from the finish line this morning. Organisers have confirmed that the participant passed away following today’s race.

A number of doctors, who were running the race themselves, stop to try and help the young man. He was transferred to Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Organisers have commended the St John’s Ambulance medical team and all those who looked after the young man and expressed their condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

The tragic incident has again highlighted attention on people taking part in marathons who are potentially prone to heart problems, or have not properly trained to the level of fitness needed to take on such a feat.

The man’s family have been informed of the terribly sad incident, but Gardai have not released the name of the young man until further notice only that the man unfortunately passed away this afternoon.
