Leah Washington, one of the most seriously injured passengers in the Smiler rollercoaster crash at Alton Towers, has had her left leg amputated just above the knee.

Ms. Washington was on the Smiler ride six days ago on a first date with Joe Pugh, when two carriages collided. Four people were severely injured, including Mr. Pugh, who suffered two broken legs. Many other passengers sustained minor wounds.

In the immediate aftermath of the crash, Leah was given a blood transfusion and morphine at the crash site, and was then rushed to hospital.

Several other people remain hospitalized. The park’s operator, Merlin, has released a statement to say that the company “takes full responsibility” for the accident.

Alton Towers has reopened to the public today.
