Tragic: At least 58 people have been killed after being struck by a train in India

Authorities in India have sadly confirmed that 58 people have been killed and at least 60 others have been seriously injured after they were struck by a train in the city of Amristar.

The horrific incident which occurred whilst the Hindu festival of Dussehra on Friday evening.

According to The Times of India, the large crowd were struck by the speeding train as they stood at a level crossing in order to catch a view of the burning effigy of the demon Ravana.

It is reported that the victims were unable to hear the oncoming train due to the noise of firecrackers being let off.

Police investigating say the incident occurred at approximately 7pm local time.

They also say they have recovered at least 58 bodies from the scene, whilst a further 60 people were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

It is understood the train which was travelling from Jalandhar to Punjab did not stop following the horrific incident.
