It has emerged this evening that Lorna Carty, the Irish woman killed by gunfire in the Tunisian beach resort of Sousse earlier today, was on holidays with her husband after he had undergone life-saving heart surgery. It is believed she had treated him to the break away to help him recover.

Ms. Carty, a nurse in a GP practice in Cavan, died after being hit by bullets sprayed by militants on a crowded beach. It is understood she had gone to the beach on her own while her husband stayed back in their hotel room. He is said to be uninjured but “completely distraught”.

It has also emerged that Ms. Carty and her husband were due to board a flight back home to Ireland mere hours after the tragic event.
