Tragic news from abroad – Two Irish men have died in a workplace accident in Perth

Two Irish men have been killed in a workplace accident in east Perth, Australia.

The men, believed to be in their 20s, were crushed when a concrete panel toppled from a truck, according to Australian media.

The accident occurred in east Perth, on a Jaxon apartment building site near the corner of Bennett and Goderich Streets about 11.35am (local time).

According to The West Australian, a witness saw a large slab was being lifted off the side of a truck by a crane.

The witness said that it appeared to unbalance the truck, which was holding four slabs on its other side.

“Two slabs fell down onto the ground,” he said.

“I saw someone in fluorescent clothing underneath the slabs.”

Reports in Ireland say that the men were from Co Derry and Co Tyrone and were working for Jaxon Construction in Australia on work visas.

The company said the site remained closed and under the control of the coroner..

The Department of Foreign Affairs has said it is aware of the case and stands ready to provide consular assistance if needed.

WorkSafe inspectors are heading to the site to begin an investigation into what caused the accident.
