Transport Minister confirms that seven new Luas trams will be fully operational within two years

The Minister for Transport Paschal Donohoe has claimed that several new Luas trams will be fully operational within the next two years.

The news comes as the Department of Transport recently ordered seven new Citadis trams which will cost of the Irish taxpayer over €40m. It is understood the new trams have ordered to ease the current overcrowding issue on the transport system. Mr Donohoe has said each new tram will be able to hold 379 passengers, which in turn will accommodate up to 80 extra passengers in the cross city project.

The Transport Minister told reporters: “The target for Luas Cross City, which is extending the Green Line … beyond where it is at the moment, down O’Connell St, up Dominic Street, and there from Phibsboro and then on to Cabra – the target has been that that will be operational from the middle of 2017, and we will deliver that,”
