Two people are feared dead after wreckage from a missing microlight was found off the coast of Co. Antrim, north of Glenarm, by the coastguard.

The small aircraft left City of Derry airport headed for Stranraer in Scotland carrying two people yesterday. The plane never arrived at its destination.

A major search began once the plane was declared missing and continued until 3am when it was suspended due to heavy fog.

The search resumed when the fog cleared. The Coastguard said a yacht that had joined the search efforts located the debris from the aircraft.

James Instance, duty controller with UK Coastguard, said: “The weather has caused problems for the search operation. However, we have drawn up an extensive search and rescue plan which will be put into action today.”
