Two toddlers have been left in a critical condition in hospital after sustaining gunshot wounds inflicted by another child.
The tragic incident unfolded after a child got a hold of a loaded gun at a private residence functioning as daycare center in the Michigan suburb of Dearborn.
At least two shots were discharged, and two children aged three were struck by the bullets.
Authorities at the scene reported finding multiple guns at the property.
The State of Michigan does not prohibit the presence of guns at childcare facilities, but does require the weapons to be unloaded and locked away from areas where children have access to.
Almost 1,300 children die by gunshot wounds in the United States every year.
