The Taoiseach Enda Kenny will soon be Deputy Enda Kenny again if Fine Gael insiders are to be believed.
A dejected Kenny has been described as a political corpse at this stage and his underlying weaknesses of political ineptitude and spineless personal qualities are making it easier for his own party to unseat him as Taoiseach.
Leo Varadkar and Simon Coveney are preparing their gloves for a political fist fight to see who replaces Kenny as Fine Gael leader and the accidental Taoiseach.
Varadkar said that Kenny would know the right time to stand aside for himself, the party and for Ireland, no less.
Michael Noonan said he had “no idea” what Mr Kenny’s intentions are but that a General Election looks likely:
“From where we stand today, it has brought the idea of an election centre stage, and that wasn’t the case when we came back in January.”
Noonan said it’s “up to the Taoiseach when he will step down”. “It’s been a very difficult week. There’s no doubt about that. The Government is united”
