There’s been utter consternation on social media after it emerged thousands of drivers may be “off the road” – at least by themselves with a new proposed law that’s likely to be passed in the coming weeks.
Shockingly, new laws that have been agreed by Cabinet could see motorists who allow their cars be driven by unaccompanied learner drivers could face fines of up to €2,000 or six months in prison.
The proposal was drafted by Road Traffic Amendment follows an examination of the law in this area by the Attorney General Seamus Woulfe and will likely be passed in the Dail in the coming weeks.
It will also give gardai the power to seize cars simply because the driver does not have a full driver licence.
The main issue however is that that if an L-driver is driving a car that is not their own, the owner of the car will be liable to receive a huge fine of €2,000 or even face six months in prison.
