Utterly appalling: Over 718,000 people were on waiting lists in August

It really does beggar belief at this stage how a country the size of Ireland could have this systemic problem.

It has emerged from figures released from the National Treatment Purchase Fund that hospital waiting lists increased to a record 718,690 patients at the end of August.

The unbeliebale figures represent an overall rise of nearly 14,000 since that of the end of July, despite an intensive validation process by the HSE, which was heavily criticised by GPs and other medics.

The figure for August of 718,690 excludes 11,718 patients who were so-called suspended from the overall list for a variety of reasons.
