A 19-year-old woman who live streamed the mocking and torture of a disabled man will serve no time in prison.
In a Chicago suburb on New Year’s Day, 2017, Brittany Covington her sister and two male friends targeted a disabled white man in racially motivated attack. She received just four years’ probation for her part in the crime.
They kidnapped the vulnerable 18-year-old using a stolen van. The young man was bound, berated and racially taunted as well as being beaten and threatened with a knife. The torture continued for hours.
The four are heard to scream “f**k white people” and “f**k Trump” several times during the torture of the man.
Some commentators in the U.S have suggested that the rhetoric of the Black Lives Matter movement and some voices in the media have encouraged these kinds of attacks on white people.
While others have gone further and suggested that had the racial roles been reversed the case would have received much greater attention from the media and more stringent sentences handed down to the perpetrators.
