Utterly disgraceful: 680 complaints have been made to HIQA over the care elderly residents received in nursing homes

This really is quite disturbing. It’s been revealed that close to 700 complaints were made last year to the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) in relation to the disgraceful care that some elderly residents recieved while staying in nursing homes.

Documents released under the Freedom of Information Act show the details of the complaints made by staff, family members, and residents themselves.

Some of the complaints relate to lack of food, inadequate care, financial abuse, filthy conditions, assaults and sexual assaults.

The documents show a general lack of care or compassion for nursing home residents but it must be stressed that all the complaints made are necessarily true and are currently being investigated.

One of the worst allegations is a resident remaining in their bedroom with a broken back for 3 weeks.

Another complaint saw a resident lying in their own waste in their bed. The person in question ended up spending 3 weeks in hospital due to neglect.
