Vacant homes tax would ease the current housing crisis says Sinn Fein

The Sinn Féin party have actively called on the Government to seriously consider introducing tax that would see property owners being forced to pay charges on their vacant premises.

The party believe the introduction of such tax would help ease the current housing crisis as it would force property owners into renting their homes to vulnerable people.

The party’s latest call comes after new figures revealed that a staggering 230,000 houses across the country are currently unoccupied.

According to Sinn Fein TD Eoin O’Broin the proposed scheme makes sense, saying: “Well the two most obvious ones are a vacant site tax, to make it costly for people to sit on vacant properties.

“The second is to use compulsory purchase orders by local authorities to get those units into stock. The third is to provide grants for the refurbishment of homes, again so that they are being brought into stock.”
