Varadkar: “Fathers wishing to avail of paternity leave must have a Public Services Card”




The Minister for Social Protection Leo Varadkar has revealed today that all fathers intending to take paternity leave must have a Public Services Card.

The new scheme which will allow fathers to take two weeks paternity leave was launched earlier today. According to minister Varadkar fathers can take the two weeks’ leave within the first 26 weeks of a child’s life or following the adoption of a child.

However Four weeks’ notice must be given to the employer before taking the leave and claimant’s wishing to avail of the €230 weekly payment must have a Public Services Card before applying.

Mr Varadkar said registration for the card was necessary for control of distribution, and he called on people to register for the card as soon as possible, preferably before September 1st.
