Varadkar says long waiting lists for children seeking health services are not acceptable

The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has confirmed that a report will be published that will highlight the amount of resources in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) across the country.

Mr Varadkar said he is seeking a report into CAMHS after recent figures published by Barnardos uncovered that there were over 37,000 children waiting on mental health, disability and speech and language treatments.

The detailed report which was brought to the attentions of the Taoiseach by Sinn Féin’s Pearse Doherty, also uncovered that 78% of children with disabilities were awaiting an assessment.

Although the Taoiseach services have been stretched, he did argue that a further 1,500 positions have been filled taking the CAMHS workforce to 10,000.

However Mr Varadkar did agree that current waiting lists are far too long and he has commissioned the report in order to explore ways to improve services and cut waiting lists.

He added that the current waiting lists were not acceptable.
