Varadkar: “Sgt Maurice McCabe deserves a full apology from the state for his public mistreatment”

The Minister for Social Protection Leo Varadkar has said that Maurice McCabe and his family deserve a full apology over his public mistreatment.

Mr Varadkar who was speaking in the Dáil last night were a motion of confidence was being debated, said that Sgt McCabe was subjected to a “scurrilous whispering campaign”.

Mr Varadkar told the Dáil: “I believe the Government owes a full and unequivocal apology to Sgt McCabe for the appalling treatment he endured at the hands of Gardaí, State agencies and government departments.”

‘We need to restore trust in these key institutions. We start by showing that we are willing to be contrite.”

Mr Varadkar also believes the six questions presented by Sgt McCabe should be answered, in full, before any tribunal is held.

Explaining: “Nobody should attempt to use the shield of legal advice, process or pending inquiries to avoid answering these questions.”
