Varadkar suggests many of the leaders of Ireland independence struggle were homosexuals in speech to commemorate decriminalization of homosexuality

As part of the governments apology to gay men and women of Ireland on the 25th anniversary of the end of the criminalisation of homosexuality, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has suggested that it is “no secret” that a number of Ireland’s founding fathers were homosexuals.

It is unclear what men and women involved in the struggle for Irish Independence the Taoiseach was referring to when he insisted they were homosexuals, but he went on to highlight the dedication of the Irish government to promoting LGBT rights around the world.

The Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan also made a statement in the Seanad apologising to the LGBT community for laws that had criminalised homosexuality.

Some online however, have said that the constant pandering to progressive causes is simply a distraction from issues such as 780,000 people in Ireland living in poverty, 10,000 people including almost 4,000 children being homeless, unprecedented hospital bed and housing crisis all of which seem less imperative to the Taoiseach and government that virtue signalling about LGBT rights.
