Varadkar: “The current Health Service problems will never be resolved, unless people begin to look after themselves”

The Minister for Health Leo Varadkar has claimed the current problems within the health service will never be resolved unless people begin to look after themselves better.

Mr Varadkar made his comments this afternoon after the health department published a new report which shows that six out of 10 Irish people are now considered overweight or obese. The Health Minister Varadkar believes the current obesity crisis needs to be addressed immediately an is calling for the Government to introduce a 20% tax on sugary drinks in the upcoming Budget.

Mr Varadkar told reporters the current rate of obesity is a pressing concern for the health service, Mr Varadkar said: “Only 32% of people are sufficiently active and 62% of us eat snack foods daily, not just one portion, but on average two.” “We will never be able to get on top of the problems we have in the health service, if we don’t improve our health as individuals.”
