Varadkar: The stories we hear about homelessness are often not the full story

The Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, has stirred up controversy after his remarks on the homelessness crisis that is currently worsening in the country.

The controversy was sparked after Taoiseach Varadkar remarked that the stories of homelessness that we hear in the media are often not the full story.

Many interpreted these remarks as a circuitous way of downplaying the tragic personal accounts of homelessness that have shocked the nation.

The Taoiseach spoke after attending the Housing Summit, where he heard first-hand accounts of adults and in particular, children, that are currently homeless and living in emergency accommodation across the country.

Meanwhile there’s now 8,000 people said to be homeless with 3,000 said to be children under the age of 12.
