Violent clashes continue in Ferguson, Missouri

Police Shooting Missouri

Social unrest continues inin the St. Louis suburb and further afield the United States as protest marches take place nationwide.

There was a second night of violent clashes in Ferguson after a grand jury’s decision not to indict police officer Darren Wilson for shooting dead an unarmed black teenager, Michael Brown, 18 at the time of his death.

Wilson, who had never before fired his gun while on duty, discharged 12 shots out a 13-round clip. He hit Brown four times.

When questioned, the police officer referred to the environment where the shooting took place as ‘hostile’. He spoke of a community dominated by gangs, where police are not ‘welcomed’.

The decision not to indict Wilson on any criminal charges, essentially exonerating him of any wrongdoing, sparked violent, racially charged riots in the small, predominantly black suburb. The violence soon spread across the country.
