Volunteer firefighters in Sicily allegedly started fires to get paid to put them out

In a bizarre case of financial fraud against a State, a group of volunteer firefighters in Sicily, Italy, has been found to have started fires deliberately, so they could be called out and be paid to put them out.

The group began raising suspicion when it was noticed that their callout rate was far higher than other similar groups.

When questioned, fifteen volunteer firefighters from the Ragusa region admitted fraud abetted by their commander.

The alleged offences date back to 2013-2015.
