Wallace: ” Leading Fine Gael backbencher has had his penalty points quashed”

There was more controversy in the Dail this afternoon after an Independent TD has claimed that a leading Fine Gael backbencher has effectively had his penalty points recinded because three notices were not served.

The claims were made by Independent TD Mick Wallace who says he is deeply concerned that there has been no change under the new Garda Commissioner Noirin O’Sullivan and that allegations of malpractice continue to be ignored. Mr Wallace continuously referred to the unnamed Fine Gael backbencher during his comments.

Mr Wallace said “I have details here of one of your Fine Gael backbenchers that has three fixed charges against him,” Wallace told the Dáil, before being told by the Ceann Comhairle to hand in his information and stay on business.
“The summons weren’t served! Will you not admit, Taoiseach, that bugger all has changed, that you have no appetite for change, [and] you like the fact that policing is still politicised in Ireland.”

Meanwhile Mr Wallace’s claims come on the same day as former whistleblower Maurice McCabe, the garda who was at the centre of the penalty points system overhaul, was announced as acting head of the traffic unit.
