Warning issued to Android users as malware in apps infects MILLIONS of smartphones

Android users have been warned to download apps with caution as up to two million phones have been infected with dangerous malware.

The malware was identified inside 45 game guide apps in Google’s official Play Store. These apps had been available on the Play Store for five months before being removed.

The malicious apps were submitted under the false names “Sergei Vernik” and “Nikolai Zalupkin”. Anyone who downloadeds these apps, is at risk to hackers accessing their device remotely.

A security programme spokesman at ‘Check Point’ explained:

“Depending on the attackers objectives, these modules can contain highly malicious code intended to root the device, conduct a DDoS attack, or even penetrate private networks.”
