Warning to motorists as wintry weather creates hazardous driving conditions




An Garda Siochana and Met Eireann are warning of extremely dangerous road conditions as wintry weather sweeps across the country and there is a forecast of snow and ice for Connacht and also areas of the midlands.

In the Northeast and Midlands icy roads are a cause for extreme caution after last night’s heavy frost.  The M1 is also being named as one of the worst affected by dangerous ice after yesterdays heavy rainfall froze over during the night.  An Garda Siochana have confirmed a number of road traffic accidents on the M1 this morning.

In Co Leitrim the R202 Ballinamore to Dromod Rd between Mohill and Dromod remains closed due to severe ice. There are also reports of black ice on the N54 in the Monaghan and Cavan areas, black ice also reported to be causing hazardous conditions in Sligo town and the Sligo county area.

Met Eireann have confirmed that passing snow showers will have faded away by late evening giving way to overnight temperatures of -2 to -5 degrees and are warning of severe ground frost and dangerous driving conditions, they have also issued a warning for patches of freezing fog which will add to the need for extreme caution on our country’s roads.
