Warning to parents: Popular children’s app displays anonymous messages about them once their name is typed

There are growing concerns amongst parents and children’s’ advocacy groups about the sudden rise of young people using the controversial app SimSimi.

The app which is becoming hugely popular in Ireland and the UK has already prompted a number of schools nationwide to write to parents and inform them about the seriousness of the app and it’s dangers to vulnerable young children.

The popular app which has caused controversy else where apparently allows people to view messages left anonymously about them, by typing in their name.

Speaking about the ramifications the app could have on young people a spokeswoman for Cyber Safe Ireland, explained how the app works, saying: “I could take your name and I could programme the computer that if anyone mentions your name that a particular phrase comes up.”

“So I could say absolutely anything about you and everyone would see that as soon as I mention your name.”

The spokeswoman also said parents should advise their children about the seriousness of the app and urge them not to download it.
