Yesterday’s National Slow Down day produced a total of 341 cars being stopped and over 135,000 being checked.

Gardai are said to be looking at various methods of keeping drivers on a go-slow by implementing “cardboard cut-outs” of life size garda cars in well known black spot areas around the country.

From a distance motorists see what they believe to be a garda vehicle and hopefully react by slowing down.

Responding to queries as to why the garda car was facing inwards, the force say regardless of which way the vehicle is facing, or the direction the garda is pointing the speed detector in, its main objective to deter drivers from speeding is in fact working.
