Water charges merry-go-round continues, as those who use ‘excessive’ amounts of water will be presented with ‘penalty points’ and fine

Another morning, another outlandish water-related story.

For years now, the issue of water charges has been at the forefront of the news, day in and day out. Week after week, farcical situations lifted straight out of a Monty Python script have dominated the airwaves, bringing shame and entertainment in equal shares.

The latest in the water saga is the proposed introduction of a ‘penalty point’ system for those who use ‘too much’ water.

If implemented, the scheme would become a “fixed charge notices system akin to that operated at present in the sphere of motor vehicles”.

Minister Simon Coveney is now the main curator in the Irish Water Hall of Shame, driving the defunct issue of water charges forward in an attempt to extort money off people.
