The public have been urged to conserve water supplies over the coming days ahead as Met Eireann have revealed that a long dry spell is expected.

In a week when Ireland is set to bask in a sweltering heatwave, homeowners and businesses have been told to conserve their water supplies as water levels in lakes, reservoirs and rivers are dramatically beginning to drop.

Met Eireann who have already issued a yellow status heat warning, have said the current hot and dry spell is likely to see drought like conditions over the coming days and weeks ahead.

The warning which applies to regions all over the country, has been echoed by Irish Water who have already reported a significant drop in water levels at many public water supplies nationwide.

Irish Water say given the recent dry spell at the beginning of June the demand to conserve water is greater than ever given that forecasters have warned that another prolonged dry spell is to come.

Although there is yet to be an imposed water conservation plan, Irish Water say they will continue to monitor water levels over the coming days.

It is believed the two warnings come as Met Eireann confirmed that Ireland is set to bask in a heatwave this week with temperatures expected to reach a sweltering 31C.

The national forecaster say the latest heatwave could bring conditions that will see Ireland record it’s highest ever temperature since 1976.

They also say the best of the weather is expected to arrive on Thursday and Friday when temperatures are expected to soar into the high twenties and low thirties.
