Water Update: Drogheda and surrounding areas to remain without water until Thursday as water main repair works hit further complications

It is day five and the drought which currently has gripped Drogheda and most of the North East currently shows no signs of ending soon as Irish Water have confirmed normal water services won’t return until Thursday at the earliest.

The crisis which has seen over 100,000 people affected has begun to take its toll as many residents in the area have become frustrated as delays in fixing the leak has caused many locals to voice their concerns on social media and even take to the streets to hold formal protests.

The drought which has not just effected the town but it’s surrounding areas including Ashbourne and Ratoath in Co Meath comes after a mains pipe burst near the Staleen Water treatment plant on Friday morning.

Although Irish Water have moved to reassure residents by posting up to date alerts on its website many people in the town now feel as though they have been let down by the company with many questioning the state utility’s motives given the extremely long timeframe to fix the problem.

The company say repair work is unfortunately taking longer than expected due to workers experiencing a number of setbacks in trying to resolve the issue which include problems with old piping in the area.

Meanwhile a spokesperson for Irish Water has also confirmed that a specially made pipe fitting is being made and brought in from Belfast and it is expected to arrive by Wednesday with repairs expected to be completed by Thursday evening.

They also say every effort is being made along with the help of Louth County Council to keep a steady supply of water coming to the town with tankers of water being brought in from other areas including Collon and Tullyallen.

Irish Water are calling on people to remain calm and have apologised for the inconvenience caused.
