Parents nationwide have urged the Department of Education to look at alternative measures for storing school books as they believe the excess weight being carried by children is causing more harm than good.
The call comes after the National Parents’ Council Primary found that 38% if parents believe that their child’s schoolbag is too heavy.
The research conducted by council also found that 22% of mothers and fathers reported one of their kids having experienced injury or pain because of the excessive weight of books on their back.
The ever growing issue was also brought before the Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs who have said they will explore a number of alternative options to address the issue.
The council say many parents feel that their child’s schoolbag is that extraordinarily heavy, they believe it would be difficult for most adults to carry let alone children.
